Anurag Kanoria’s aesthetic selection of furniture, art, home accents, linen, lighting, and collectibles in his 60,000 square foot space in Byculla is as beautiful as it is overwhelming. His latest offering is an affordable and approachable range of furniture and home décor pieces in a brand called Ficus. Discern spoke to him to learn more:
What is Ficus? How is it different from The Great Eastern Home?
Anurag: Ficus is a new brand that we have conceptualized over the last three years. At The Great Eastern Home, we have been catering to the very top-end of Indian and international clients and realized that for the middle to upper-middle market in India there is really no design-based or aesthetic driven brand that spans the country. Ficus addresses that need.
What is cool about Ficus?
Anurag: Ficus is a heavily design-focused brand. We employed the help of an architectural firm in New York, who specialize in retail architecture, to help us imagine this. Our desire was to bring a very international flavour to Ficus: a store that would be at home in any city of the world, not just an extension of put-together Indian looks.
Where in India can we expect Ficus stores?
Anurag: We have two full stores in Mumbai, and one as a store-within-a-store concept as well, also in Mumbai. The plan is to reach out to the constantly growing market in India as well as neighbouring countries over the next few years. We are looking at expanding in cities such as Surat, Guwahati, Bhubaneshwar, Pune, and Visakhapatnam.
What is your vision for Ficus over the next few years?
Anurag: To extend the brand as a pan-India chain. We are also looking at opening stores in Bhutan (where we have already done a very successful trial run by participating in their largest trade fair) and Indonesia.
"We welcome you to explore a fresh new concept called Ficus Fine Living, where we draw inspiration from nature to craft a range of furniture, décor accents, linens, lighting, artefacts, and more. Our distinctive offering seamlessly blurs the boundaries between the outdoors and indoors, and merges materials, textures, colours, forms and finishes in ways that are contemporary yet timeless. Ficus combines an aesthetic that refashions the natural in unique and versatile ways to create an urban sanctuary enlivened by style and substance." - Anurag Kanoria |
What does Discern Living mean to Ficus?
Anurag: Discern Living means that our clients have a choice of products for their homes, products that have a deep focus on aesthetic and design. These choices are not limited to products that are run of the mill items picked up from trade fairs in bulk.
Discern Tip: The interior looks created by Ficus within their store help you put together decor solutions for your bedrooms, seating arrangments and transitional spaces, complete with personalized accessories. We love their quaint, intricate carved wooden blocks and masks hung on raw silk frames. A great way for you to repurpose some curios and antiques lying around the house. |
