A force to reckon with in the world of interiors, Rohina Anand is the creative spirit behind AA Living, one of India’s most well-curated home stores, offering high-quality bed and bath textiles, rugs, and accessories. Merging tradition (the brand is almost two decades old) with technology, Rohina's almost 50,000 Instagram followers are given a peek into her travels, her design inspiration, and the beautiful things she likes to surround herself with, all synonymous with AA Living. On the occasion of Mother's Day, we asked Rohina and her mother Rashmi, who was instrumental in launching the brand, to share some thoughts on their bond, via a Discern-style Q&A.

Rohina Anand
Three words to describe your relationship with your mother?Friend, guiding light, inner voice.
The greatest life lesson she has taught you?Always be truthful and work for a greater cause.
A habit of hers you wish you could pick up?Her ability to manage staff so effortlessly.
A quality of hers you wish you had?
Her ability to never stop learning and studying.
A quality of yours you wish she had?
My way with words.
The best style lesson she ever taught you?
Keep it classic and stick to solids.
How would you describe her sense of design?
She's very classic. She loves her basic shades like beige and white and then piles on texture to add in interesting elements. Even when she goes glam, it will always be very minimalistic and subtle.
Is she more vintage or modern?
I think she's just herself.
Does she follow trends or live outside the box?
Absolutely outside the box; she's never been one to follow norms.
Is her home decor style more classic or eclectic?Classic and easy on the eye. She looks for things that are durable so she doesn't have to keep redecorating.
If you were to give someone an idea for a Mother’s Day gift, what would you recommend?
Personalised cushions or towels are great because they add so much to a bathroom space. If you want to indulge your mum, I would recommend a bedding set of 1,000-thread count sheets.
Your first memory of being creative/designing something?Ever since I can remember I've been drawing, creating, painting. My earliest memory would probably be me trying to replicate 3D origami models from my child craft books.
Biggest challenge working together?
Nothing really. She gives me a lot of space to do as I please.
The best part of working together? She handles our staff so effortlessly and everyone loves working with us.
Favourite part of the design process?
Watching it all come together during the sampling stage. It's a thrill watching CAD's come to life and become actual textiles.
What inspires you?
Understated elegance.
What is your design philosophy?
Never over-design or over accessorise. Minimalism never goes out of style.
Rashmi Anand
Three words to describe your relationship with your daughter?Inseparable, suffocatingly close.
The greatest life lesson she has taught you?
Motherhood is the path to selfless action.
A habit of hers you wish you could pick up?
Rohina has perfection running in her veins. She will not rest till it's perfect in her perspective. Every experience has to be analysed and a lesson learnt.
A quality of hers you wish you had?
She is highly motivated and creative. Her execution never fails to impress me. I believe that vision without execution is delusion.
A quality of yours you wish she had?
Patience of a 58-year-old me! Of course, she may disagree but yes, I have learnt to be patient.
Is she more vintage or modern?
She is inspired by vintage aesthetics but caters to a contemporary customer.
Does she follow trends or live outside the box?
She tends to think about what she can do with the box.
Biggest challenge working together?
I honestly can’t remember the last time we disagreed about something. We’re usually on the same page and choose to discuss rather than argue.
The best part of working together?Being together. We may not have it all together, but together we have it all.
What inspires you?
Honesty and selflessness.
The advice you have for other female entrepreneurs?
Have a vision and see it through. It's 2017; there should be no excuses.
