When designing a space, what is the most important factor for you?
The most important factor for me is how the space is going to be used, and who will be using it. Not only is this the starting point of my design but it is also the common thread that runs through most of the elements of the project. This doesn't mean that the outcome is purely utility oriented; in fact, it is far from it! For me, it is fun and challenging to blend utility with creativity, resulting in a winning combination of the two.

Design trends you love this year?
I'm not big on using gimmicky elements in my design and veer more towards natural and timeless materials. I’m really excited to see a lot of metal this year, especially in dark finishes such as bronze, burnt copper, and gunmetal grey. I love working with metal and use it a lot in my work, so it's exciting to see it trending this year.

Your most treasured project and biggest win? What makes it so special?
My best project to date is a villa that I designed in Indore. The dynamics between me, the project, and the client just worked out brilliantly and everything fell into place perfectly. There were a lot of elements in this project that were really exciting - like being able to put a live tree in the foyer of the house, and using a wooden jaali in some areas, in lieu of curtains. The whole feel of the place turned out exactly the way I had visualised it, and my clients absolutely love living there. This is one of the most gratifying things for me.

Name one designer you would love to work with and why. What would you like to build together?
I'd love to work with Philippe Starck because his work is unpretentious, relevant, and has a great sense of humour. I just love the way he blends elegance with quirkiness, and creates magic! What I'd like to build with him is an amusement park for adults - a crazy, magical space that brings out the kid in everyone. I can't imagine anyone more fun to do this with than him.

Discern to you means?
Discern to me is the ability to recognise and differentiate. From a design perspective, it means having the flair to select elements, designs, and materials that blend perfectly and bring out the best in a space. It’s knowing what’s going to be most relevant to your vision.

Professional Spotlight is our special feature which highlights professionals from the design community whose portfolio of work Discern is proud to exclusively showcase for you.
